I was on a self-guided trip, doing the big-ticket items with separate day tours, but knew I needed to really understand Sydney's city center.
I figured I could find the spots on a map, but I desperately wanted the stories behind them.
I wanted to know, Why is this place important? What's the history here?
Just looking at buildings without context feels so… superficial.
I was bummed that this walking tour only runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and I almost gave up, thinking my schedule wouldn't fit.
But I managed to make it work and decided to go all-in, booking both the morning and sunset tours on the same day!
And oh my goodness, it was the best decision ever.
Our guide, Sophie (or was it Gina? They're all so passionate!), was phenomenal.

Small buildings, Macquarie’s statue, various stones, and sculptures—I would have just walked right past them without a second thought, or probably wouldn't have even known they existed.

Thanks to our guide, I didn't miss a single major Sydney spot.
My knowledge grew so much, and I truly felt like I had studied and explored the city.
It was such a fulfilling day, I highly, highly recommend it!
Now, a quick heads-up for parents: If you have elementary school-aged kids, especially younger ones (like my 2nd grader), be prepared.
The constant Who am I? Where am I? What are these adults talking about? I don't want to walk! was real, haha!
(I'm sure my kid isn't the only one, right?).
We rested for about an hour and a half after lunch before the afternoon tour, and she did much better then.
I think the accumulated travel fatigue might have made the morning a bit tougher.
They can physically handle the walk (morning is about 3km, afternoon 4-5km), but grasping all the historical explanations might be challenging for them.
I kept telling her, You don't need to understand everything, just enjoy the scenery!
So, parents of younger elementary kids, definitely keep that in mind.
Despite that small point, which is more about my child's age than the tour itself, it was truly amazing.
The sunset tour, in particular, crossing to North Sydney by ferry and watching the city lights come on, was magical.
